What is a Doula?

     A doula is a labor support professional, sometimes called a labor assistant. We provide emotional, physical, and informational support to birthing women and their families.

    In order to be a Community Doula, the doula must:

  • Be certified through DONA International, or working toward this certification
  • Have a clean criminal background check with no crimes against people or property
  • Be experienced in working with diverse communities
  • Be familiar with birth traditions and cultural birth practices and beliefs
  • Have a good reputation in their community, local clinics, and local hospitals
  • Be committed to professional development and conduct
  • Follow the DONA International Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
